When an Acclaimed Director and a Groundbreaking Comedian Chose Clinton Hill Above Anywhere Else

Clinton Hill has been the setting for a wide range of important cultural events. Perhaps the most impressive of these was the time when an Oscar-winning filmmaker and a multi-Emmy-winning comedian teamed up to make an incredible documentary set in the neighborhood.

It all started in 2004, when the comedian Dave Chappelle, inspired by the iconic concert documentary Wattstax, set out to create his dream block party. French film director Michel Gondry, who had recently directed Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, soon signed up to direct this special event.

Chappelle and Gondry’s acclaim at the time led to a range of musicians flocking to perform. Soon, they had signed up Kanye West, Mos Def, Common and John Legend. Such was the excitement of this event that eventually the hip-hop trio The Fugees decided to reform for the first time since 1997.

In the present day, the final documentary, titled Dave Chappelle’s Block Party, serves as an important part of history for any New Yorker, and especially for a resident of Clinton Hill. It shows how the area unites people from all walks of life and how the happenings of this area inspire others. For instance, a number of attendees of this event have gone on to enjoy significant success, such as the critically acclaimed Grammy Award-winning rapper J. Cole.

Of course, since the release of this documentary, public opinion of Dave Chappelle has shifted considerably. His opinions of trans people have been sharply criticized. However, Dave Chappelle’s Block Party is an important piece of work because of this controversy as well as in spite of it. A significant amount of the movie focuses on him and depicts him in a community he loves. And this footage shines a light on who the comedian was in 2004 compared to who he is now. Because of this, everyone should watch Dave Chappelle’s Block Party, to gain a fuller understanding of a controversial individual.

Seek out Dave Chappelle’s Block Party to highlight what Clinton Hill can inspire and to remember the days when Dave Chappelle was still beloved.
